My Top 50 All-Time Favourite Films (Part 3)*

Posted on by Yoshke in Lists, Movies, Reviews |

I’ve just finished preparing penne carbonara. Yum yum. But Gawd, I’m exhausted. And I refuse to eat it with parmesan cheese since Dam-dam used the poor cheese as a metaphor for his dandruff. GROSS!

And there’s an epidemic affecting Film graduates in the blogosphere. First it was Ayn with her Top 70 Favourite Films. And then myself. And now, Dam-dam is starting to feature his Top 80. And Lei, Top 20. Come on, come on. Let’s compare afterwards. Hehehe.

Anyway, we’re almost halfway to my Top 10. If you missed the first two sets, you can find them here (50-41) and here (41-30). Moving on…

30. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Genre: Comedy
Director: David Frankel
Starring: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway
Plot: A naive young woman comes to New York and scores a job as the assistant to one of the city’s biggest magazine editors, the ruthless and cynical Miranda Priestly.
Top Critics’ Average Mark: 82%

“A million girls would kill for this job.”

Opening this batch is the very unforgiving Miranda Priestley and her two assistants Emily and Emily Andy. I soooo love Meryl Streep in this movie. Not her best performance but still truly unforgettable. Although some people may find this movie typical, formulaic or another ugly duckling tale or whatever, no one can say anything bad about its witty dialogues, terrific acting performances, and the gorgeous costumes and the uber-hot women wearing them especially Emily Blunt. If I had to judge a film just for its entertainment value, I’d give this a 100. Really funny movie. That’s all.

29. Closer (2004)

Genre: Drama
Director: Mike Nichols
Starring: Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Clive Owen, Natalie Portman
Plot: The relationships of two couples become complicated and deceitful when the man from one couple meets the woman of the other.
Top Critics’ Average Mark: 74%

“If you believe in love at first sight, you never stop looking.”

This is the only Julia Roberts-starrer in this list. Ehehehe. A cynical way of looking at relationships, Closer was publicised as the more realistic look at love. And true enough, it was very realistic. And by realistic, I mean “painful.” It’s all about lies. About cheating. About love. About longing. About confusion. About relationships. About Natalie Portman. She’s ravishing. Hehehehe.

My Top 50 All-Time Favourite Films (Part 2)*

Posted on by Yoshke in Lists, Movies, Reviews |

A’right. I think it’s time to go back to my countdown of my most-adored movies. If you missed the first set (50-41), click here. Anyway, I have to remind you again that this is not a list of the greatest films in history but my favourites. This list is very personal. And of course, my taste may not jive with yours. You can rant all you want if you find anything disagreeable, see if I care. (Taray!)

Anyway, on with the next batch. Popcorns ready? Here it goes.

40. Batman Movies: Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), Batman and Robin (1997), Batman Begins (2005)

Genre: Adventure, Action
Director: Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan
Starring: Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger; Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny deVito; Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman; George Clooney, Chris O’Donnell, Alicia Silverstone, Uma Thurman, Arnold Schwarzenegger; Christian Bale, Katie Holmes
Plot: Billionaire Bruce Wayne walks the fine line between justice and vengeance as he fights crime as the Batman.
Top Critics’ Average Mark: 59%

“It’s not who you are underneath, it’s what you do that defines you.”

The best of all Batman movies, definitely, is Batman Begins. My friend and movie buddy, Ayn, (ay, may ganun?) wrote on her own list: “Oh, I admit it. I just wanted to put a Batman movie in the list because I love Batman. I’ve been in love with Batman ever since I was a little kid. I think I actually wanted to be Batman at some point. Yes, I even love Batman Forever, if only for Nicole Kidman. One thing I love about Batman movies is the absence of America-as-the-world’s-superhero theme that is present in the Superman and Spiderman franchises… I’m so excited for next chapter of Batman (The Dark Knight) coming 2008 with Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart and Gary Oldman.”

Howkeeey. Ayn already said pretty much EVERYTHING I want to say. Fine. But I disagree with her about something. She deliberately excluded “Batman and Robin” from her list because she didn’t like it. (How could you, Ayn?! How could you?!) I liked it. And oh, this is the second Nicole Kidman-starrer in my list.

Christian Bale, you are my superhero. I mean, Batman.

39. Harry Potter Movies: The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), The Goblet of Fire (2005), The Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Genre: Adventure
Director: Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Newell, David Yates
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint
Plot: A young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Top Critics’ Average Mark: 83%

“It is not our abilities that show what we truly are… it is our choices.”

I’ll be lying if I say that I didn’t like the first two Harry Potter movies. I liked them, too. But I was not as crazy over them as I was over the last three adaptations. But the best in the series is the third installment, The Prisoner of Azkaban. It is the only movie that I can say “better than the book.” But then of course, it’s not fair to Newell and Yates because they had to adapt such a thick book to just a two-hour magical experience. But still, Cuaron is really the best. One thing that amazes me is how they would cast people who actually look like the way I imagined them to be when I was reading the book. Luna Lovegood, for example, I swear, that was exactly how I imagined her. I loove her. She’s adorable. Anyways, sometimes I wish this whole Potter thing not to end. At least, I have something to look forward to every year. Oh well, that’s life.

38. Pirates of the Caribbean Movies: The Curse of Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007)

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
Director: Gore Verbinski
Starring: Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom
Plot: Damn, this is hard. According to Ayn: a pirate’s life.
Top Critics’ Average Mark: 47% Aaaw

“You’ll have the chance to do something… something courageous. And when you do, you’ll discover something. That you’re a good man.”

I don’t like Johnny Depp. But I loooooooove Captain Jack Sparrow, and for that, okie, I like Johnny Depp. (Agh, can’t make up my mind. Help!) And what do I like about these movies? Hmmmm. Do I really have to say anything? Whatever I say, it won’t change the fact that you LOVED these films. And that you will still watch the next Pirates films…. Er, and yeah, I just can’t think of anything to say. Ehehehehe.

My Top 50 All-Time Favourite Films (Part 1)*

Posted on by Yoshke in Lists, Movies, Reviews |

Status: Tweetums, ehehehe
Music: Always Come Back to Your Love
- Samantha Mumba

The American Film Institute has just released an updated version of their 100 Greatest American Movies list. And Ayn has just completed her Top 70 Favourite Films. So I guess it’s my turn to publish my own list — my Top 50 All-Time Fave Films.

Hmmm. Why Top 50? I don’t know. It was originally 40. Then changed it to 44 to give slots to a few films I had forgotten about. And now it’s 50 because I broke some of the tie-ups — you know, multiple films sharing one rank. So now it’s final. Fifty. Final. Promise. But then of course, when I change my mind again, blame my fickle-ness. Whatever.

Anyway, a few notes: I haven’t seen Schindler’s List, Memento, A Clockwork Orange and Requiem for a Dream yet so don’t expect to see them on this list. And remember that this is not a countdown of the best films in history but my personal favourite films — movies I enjoyed the most.

OK, here we go.

50. The Lord of the Rings – Trilogy (2001-03)
Genre: Epic, Fantasy
Director: Peter Jackson
Based on: The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
Starring: Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Andy Serkis
Plot: A young Hobbit has been entrusted with an ancient Ring. Now he must embark on an epic quest in order to destroy it.
Top Critics’ Average Mark: 98%

“One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”

To be honest, when the first film The Fellowship of the Ring was released, I wasn’t excited. The whole Lord of the Rings thing did not appeal to me in any way. Not even Orlando Bloom. Haha. I even said that the only thing that I might like about it was Cate Blanchett. I never read the book. I never even bothered to see this in a theatre. I only began liking it when I watched The Two Towers, which became my fave film in the trilogy. And since then, I’d considered this trilogy as one fantastic film.

49. Citizen Kane (1941)
Genre: Drama, Mystery
Director: Orson Welles
Starring: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore
Plot: Following the death of a publishing tycoon, news reporters scramble to discover the meaning of his final utterance: ‘Rosebud.’
Top Critics’ Mark: 100% WOW

“Some called him a hero. Others called him a heel…”

OK, film critics, you can cringe now. The film that every film organisation in this world considers The Greatest Film of All Time is only my #49. The film is brilliant. But sadly, I didn’t make any connection to the story, and that’s always a big thing for me. I need to relate. But it is a very entertaining and artistic film. And yeah, classic. Might really be the greatest film ever made. Every scene and shot was well-thought out. Every element means something. Every camera angle. Every prop. Every movement. Every space used, and unused. Greatest. But maybe I prefer something uh contemporary.

We all have so many things we want to do before we die — travel the world, get rich, marry the man/woman of our dreams, have a happy family, whatever. Mine? What do I want to do before I die? Hmmm. Let me see…

1. Chris O’Donnell          2. Chris Evans             3. Christian Bale

There. Those three. Coincidentally, their first names are all Chris. Hmmm. Oh. You were expecting the three things I really want to do before I die? Uhm, THEM! I really wanna “do” them. Hahaha. I’d be ready to die after I “did” them. They’re like… heaven. Hehehe.

And the top 3 women from Hollywood:

1. Nicole Kidman           2. Keira Knightley       3. Catherine Zeta-Jones

How about you? What are the three things you want to “do” before you die? Er… I mean, who are your top 3 Hollywood crushes. Ehehehe.

7 Random Facts About Me

Posted on by Yoshke in Health, Lists, Vanities |

Status: Higher
Music: Stickwitu
- The Pussycat Dolls

I was supposed to post an entry about my ex-girlfriend and my high school friends today but I noticed I was tagged by Janus. You all know I’m not the type of blogger who is into web memes or whatever, but what the hell, I think, as a sign of courtesy, I gotta give it a try.

Here are the rules: Each player starts with 7 random facts about themselves on their Blog. People who are tagged need to blog 7 facts about themselves and post the rules as well. At the end of their blog list 7 people you are tagging. Let them know that they are tagged by leaving them a comment.

I think I have described myself well on this blog’s About page, so I’ll be getting some parts of this post from there, and I’ll just try to add some things.

The first two facts are things you HAVE to know for my safety (and perhaps, yours, too):

1. I’m a hematophobe/hemaphobe. I am extremely afraid (more like disgusted, really) of blood — human blood, in particular. I dread the sight of human blood. Even my own. ESPECIALLY my own. I can stand seeing blood as long as I don’t know it’s HUMAN blood. And I can stand seeing them on TV and in films. I only freak out when I know it’s REAL HUMAN BLOOD.

2. I am allergic to dogs and cats — specifically, their fur. I have a bad pair of lungs (but I’m a smoker, hihihi), and when I was a kid, I always got hospitalised because of asthma. But as I grew up, my body became stronger and less susceptible to allergens: pollen, dirt, and smoke. For some reason, my system never learnt to tolerate fur. I suffer mild asthma attacks whenever I got in contact with dogs or cats, or anyone who had been with these animals before getting near me.

My Top 5 All-Time Favorite Anime Shows

Posted on by Yoshke in Anime, Lists |

Status: This headache is killing me.
Music: Before He Cheats
- Carrie Underwood

I am an anime lover. It’s Japan’s greatest contribution to mankind. Hehehe. And in our family, I am the only one who appreciates the beauty and art of anime. And among my university friends, it was only Reen whom I could talk about it so passionately with. (Excluding hentai, that is. Otherwise, I’d have to say Vince and Nep, too. Hahaha.) Every night, you’d find my entire family together in the living area watching primetime drama but not me. I’m usually upstairs, watching something else — CNN, National Geographic, HBO and yes, Animax Channel. My brother cringes whenever he finds me watching anime, insisting that I would not get anything from such crap. Those remarks I often shrug off. Anime is not crap. In fact, nothing else has tackled five of the concepts that I value the most better than my top five all-time favourite anime shows.

5. Love | Let’s start with the most popular — Sailormoon! Who doesn’t know Sailormoon? It tells us a very unrealistic story (you know, trying to save the solar system and all in the name of, er, the moon) yet we often find ourselves relating to most of the characters. This is because Sailormoon is all about the most popular concept in pop art, love. And it’s not just romantic love (Usagi and Mamoru), it emphasizes love for friends and family, as well, and all the major components of love — passion and trust.

4. Change | We hear this over and over again: The only thing that doesn’t and won’t change in this world is change itself, the entire concept of change. It’s just a matter of the way you change and the path you choose, and the person you want to change into. Samurai X is one of the greatest stories about change. How Kenshin chooses to forget about his former self, Battosai, the legendary manslayer, to become a better man. Samurai X wants us to realise that we are not defined by who we were or who we used to be, but who we are and who we choose to be in the future. The past should not be a standard for humanity. Aside from change, Samurai X also focuses on honour, a value I also treasure.

3. Peace | Being a diplomat-wannabe, it’s just apt that I value this concept. Ahaha. And the best anime show that discusses this is also the most entertaining for me, God(?) Save Our King. It is about a world in another dimension where humans and demons live together — but not necessarily in harmony. It debunks the whole idea that demons are fallen angels with bat-wings and horns. Demons are depicted as very human-like but with supernatural powers (to control any of the elements: fire, water, earth, and air). The setup is very ironic for in that world, humans hate demons just for being demons. And demons hate humans for being evil. (Ahihihi) There’s been several wars and it seems like it won’t be over yet. Until the protaganist, Yuri Shibuya enters the picture. He is from OUR world, and was proclaimed king of the demon world just because he was in all-black attire (his school uniform) and he has black eyes. Yuri doesn’t like the idea but chooses to accept the job anyways. As king, he learns about the complexities of war and the value of peace, and struggles to mend the broken bonds between humans and demons. I have already posted an entry about this program a year ago. Click here.

2. Truth | The two sides of my brain are still arguing if truth is really relative or absolute. But no matter how you look at it, truth is an important concept that everyone must value. I can’t think of any show that puts much emphasis on this other than Detective Conan. And Detective Conan is pretty entertaining, too. The best episodes as far as I’m concerned include the Film Club Reunion Murder Case where a killer dressed as mummy attacks them; the Bloody Venus Murder Case where a band vocalist is poisoned; and the Library Corpse Search where Conan and the other kids look for a dead man hidden somewhere in the library. Aside from truth, justice is also tackled. However, I believe that because of much focus on the motives and justifications for doing the crimes, the people behind the show also want us to believe that sometimes, when one is indicted or convicted, it doesn’t mean that justice is served. Let’s face it, sometimes there are victims who deserve to be assaulted. Anyhow, the guilty is still punished. But it doesn’t take away the idea that we symphatize with the guilty sometimes as the show intended.

1. Life | Fullmetal Alchemist is my all-time favourite anime. And to think that it’s number 1 despite the fact that I still haven’t finished watching the series, this must be something. This show strongly reminds the audience how important and sacred life is, especially human life. The story revolves around the first rule of alchemy “You cannot gain anything without losing something in return,” and the two lead characters, brothers Edward and Aphonse Elric, learnt it the hard, cruel way. It also discussed major issues that humanity is facing today — war, genocide, racism, etc. It also criticizes science and technology and questions its limits. The best episode for me so far is the one where Nina, a lovely 4-year old girl, was turned into a dog hybrid by her father with Alchemy. That episode made me cry all night long. If there’s one thing that this show taught me, it’s the fact that the human body is made up of chemicals that are easily available and pretty cheap — a little more than $20. But the soul (being the memories, emotions, experiences, bond we had with a person) is priceless. And so, we have no right to mess with human life.

The Ratings Game: The Nationwide Invasion

Posted on by Yoshke in Lists, TV |

Status: Need to pee!
Music:
Beautiful Disaster - Kelly Clarkson

My friends have always considered me as a true-blue kapamilya. The truth is: I still believe that being loyal to a TV network per se is crazy. As for my case, believe it or not, I go for the station that gives me the better programs — and yes, for me, that’s ABS-CBN as of the moment.

It’s been a while since ABS-CBN claimed that they’re the leading broadcast network. That’s because, for the longest time, AGB-Nielsen could only measure the viewership in Mega Manila (Metro Manila and the suburbs). And GMA7 consistently is the top network in this area until now. And then came the nationwide urban ratings — the NUTAM (National Urban Television Audience Measurement). And that’s a different story.

In the latest official national ratings, ABS-CBN has a very comfortable lead (12%; ABS-CBN 47%, GMA7 35%) proving that it is the most-watched TV channel nationwide. Fifteen in the Top 20 programs are also kapamilya shows. To see what Vice-President Charo Santos-Concio had to say about this, click this link.

Anyway, here’s the Top 20 Programs according to NUTAM (March 4-17, 2007):

1. Sana Maulit Muli (ABS-CBN) 34.9%
2. Maging Sino Ka Man (ABS-CBN) 33.5%
3. TV Patrol World (ABS-CBN) 31.6%
4. Komiks: The Adventures of Pedro Penduko (ABS-CBN) 30.4%
5. XXX (ABS-CBN) 29.4%
6. Maria Flordeluna (ABS-CBN) 28.9%
7. Asian Treasures (GMA) 28.5%
8. Super Twins (GMA) 28.2%
9. Rated K: Handa na ba Kayo? (ABS-CBN) 27.8%
10. Wowowee (ABS-CBN) 27.7%
11. John en Shirley (ABS-CBN) 27.6%
12. Bakekang (GMA) 26.8%
13. Pinoy Big Brother: Saturday (ABS-CBN) 25.8%
14. Maala-ala Mo Kaya (ABS-CBN) 25.4%
15. Pinoy Big Brother: Sunday (ABS-CBN) 25.3%
16. Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (GMA) 24.9%
17. Pinoy Big Brother: Weekdays (ABS-CBN) 24.5%
18. Goin’ Bulilit (ABS-CBN) 24.2%
19. Sharon (ABS-CBN) 23.5%
20. 24 Oras (GMA) 22.8%

So there. The only things that make me happy in this list are PBB and Maging Sino Ka Man.

My Top 9 Unforgettable Moments of 2006

Posted on by Yoshke in Career, Lists, Travel, University, Vanities |

Status: Reminiscin’
Music:
Say It Right – Nelly Furtado

I know this comes a bit late. But what the hell? I just want to say this. You know, 2006 is not that pretty a year for me, but it’s not terrible either. But surely, the past year gave me a lot of memories I can never ever let go of. Here are the top 9 highlights of the past year:

9. World Tour (?).
Have you ever gone to more than five countries in just one day? Sounds impossible, eh? Well, Maw and I have. Some time in July or August, the quest for a Film school scholarship started. Maw and I did a little world tour. And because technically, foreign embassies are foreign territories, we felt like we were having a world tour when in fact we never left Manila, entering one embassy to another, sending letters to ambassadors, and talking with some foreigners. It was fun.

8. Mugged!
Talking with Tonet while walking has to be my biggest regret last year. Just a block away from Andre‘s apartment (which is now my apartment), a stranger with a knife approached me and forced me to hand him my cellphone. I did not become upset because of the cellphone. It was the idea that I was mugged. It was terribly traumatic. And for the longest time last year, I was cursing the entire urban poor population, and whenever I saw a squatters’ area, I secretly wished for a big fire. See this post for more. But after several months, I grew tired of hating them and learnt to understand them, and eventually got over it. I’m a good boy now.

7. This Kiss, This Kiss
It’s not the kiss per se that is unforgettable. It’s how the issue exploded way out of proportion in no time. Nah, I rather not discuss it.

6. North Luzon Trip
Straight from a Palawan trip, I joined Winwin, Icang, Dohna, Pam, Lei, Nep, and KZ on a three-day trip to Northern Luzon — Pangasinan, Baguio, and every place in between. A lot of things happened that I don’t know what to say. Heehee.

5. Thesis Defence
Yes, it was nerve-wracking, but after a few months, I could barely remember the entire thesis defence experience. Maybe because, there was really nothing spectacular and nothing horrible to remember. It was just, all right, we faced the faculty, defended our film, and that was it. All happy.

4. Palawan Trip
A simple trip to Palawan turned into a wake, when my grandfather died while we were having a vacation there. All my plans were cancelled and for a week, I just helped my relatives take care of the wake and ran some errands. But less than an hour after the funeral, I went island-hopping. Hahaha. And it felt fantastic. I told you, I’m the type who easily moves on.

3. World Cup — Germany
Unlike Ayn who really flew to Germany and its neighbouring countries and felt the stagerring energy the world’s favourite sport creates, I satisfied myself by just staying inside my room and having my eyes glued to my TV screen as I watched football game after game after game. And when the quarterfinals kicked off, I stayed in Manila just to see the games live in Ateneo. And yes, the lowest point of last year for me was when Germany lost to Italy in the semi-final. That was totally bad… and painful.

2. Thesis Production
The memories of the entire thesis production linger longer than the thesis defence. I learnt a lot of things and met new friends in the process. Pre-production — I got closer to Prech. Principal photography — I got closer to several people, some of which I did not even imagine I could be friends with. Editing — I got closer to Andre. And of course, from the very start up to the very last minute of production, Winwin was with me. And that was really unforgettable.

1. Graduation
Finally, after four years in a hell-like heaven, it was over. I was very proud, and indeed, it was the most unforgettable.

Picky on Food

Posted on by Yoshke in Lists, Music, Oddities, Vanities |

Status: Starved
Music: Candyman
– Christina Aguilera

Asta and Dohna have told me a number of times that I am very picky when it comes to food. Actually, they didn’t use the word picky; they said I’m too maarte. If I were a different person, I would’ve felt bad. But apparently, it’s true. I’m really maarte, but only on food. And I’m not just picky. I’m strangely picky. Here are some of my strange habits and preferences:

3. Aside from Filipino and Chinese cuisines, the only Asian foods that I munch on are Thailand’s tom yam, Indonesia’s nasi goreng, and Japan’s chicken teriyaki and pork tonkatsu. Anything else — thanks, but no thanks. I love the Korean people, but….

2. I won’t eat carrots once they’re cooked. And I won’t eat tomatoes until they’re cooked. Fresh carrots and cooked tomatoes taste better. But aside from that, I’m like this for health reasons. Recent studies show they’re healthier.

1. I don’t eat beef. I don’t know why. My brain must have had repressed the memory of my experience that made me hate beef so much. I throw up because of the mere smell of beef, raw or cooked. And nope, not even hamburgers I can stand. Ironically, everyone in my family is a beef-lover. And they love preparing kare-kare, beef steak, caldereta, bulalo, etc., so whenever they cook something with beef, I lock myself in my room so as not to smell anything… beefy.

When I was younger, my parents made a rule that I had to eat, or at least taste, anything that they were serving on the table. But I guess I was just a severely spoiled brat they did not succeed in any way. How? Because I really would not eat and starve myself, and my parents would show pity on me, and prepare something else. Since then, they never forced me to try beef again.
