Wow, Wow, Wow Philippines

I finally checked out Tourism Department’s official website and all I could say was “WOW!” It is sooo nice I even forgot I was in the office “working.” And gosh, I was so overwhelmed by how much I still have to learn about the Philippines, considering that I have lived my entire life here. Looking at their trivia page, all I could utter were more wows. Here are some of the information I found that might interest you (Although most of them I’ve been pretty aware of since childhood, they are still worth posting):

  • Filipino bowler Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno was the first bowler to be elevated to the International Bowling Hall of Fame based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The Philippine Congress has named him “Greatest Filipino Athlete of All Time.”

  • Philippine National Hero and writer Jose Rizal could read and write at age 2. He grew up to speak more than 20 languages, including Latin, Greek, German, French, and Chinese. What were his last words? “Consummatum est!” (“It is done!”)
  • The popular toy, the yoyo, was invented by 16th century hunters in the Philippines.
  • The Philippines became the first Asian country to win FIVE major international beauty pageant crowns — two for Miss Universe, in 1969 and 1973, and three for Miss International, in 1965, 1970, and 1979.
  • The antibiotic erythromycin — used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections, middle ear infections, and skin infections — was created by Filipino scientist Abelardo Aguilar, and has earned American drug giant Eli Lilly billions of dollars. Neither Aguilar nor the Philippine government received royalties.
  • Philippines Herald war journalist Carlos P. Romulo was the first Asian to win a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism in 1942. He was also aide-de-camp to General Douglas MacArthur in World War II; Philippine resident commissioner in the U.S. Congress from 1944-46; and the first Asian to become UN President in 1949.
  • On January 18, 1995, Pope John Paul II offered mass to an estimated 4 to 5 million people at Luneta Park, Manila, Philippines, making it to the Guiness Book of World Records for the Biggest Papal Crowd.
  • There are 12,000 or so species of seashells in the Philippines. The Conus Gloriamaris or “Glory of the Sea” is the rarest and most expensive in the world.
  • Of the 500 known coral species in the world, 488 are found in the Philippines.
  • Of the eight species of marine turtles worldwide, five are reported to be found in the Philippines: the Green Turtle, Hawkbill, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, and Loggerhead.
  • Of the eight known species of giant clams in the world, seven are found in the Philippines.
  • The largest bell in Asia hangs at the belfry of the 221-year old Panay Church. It is 7 feet in diameter and 7 feet in height, and weighs 10.4 tons. Its tolling can be heard as far as 8 km. away. It was casted from 70 sacks of coins donated by the townspeople as a manifestation of faith and thanksgiving.
  • The World Cup, which was instituted in 1965, is contested annually by the national champions of the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ). The highest number of wins is 4, by Filipino bowler Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno: 1976, 1980, 1992, and 1996.
  • Tagala – the Philippines first Filipino-Spanish dictionary which was printed in 1613, 25 years older than the first book printed in the United States.
  • In the Philippines, Filipinos were introduced to the English language in 1762 by British invaders, not Americans. Philippines is the world’s 3rd largest English-speaking nation, next to the USA and the UK.
  • The world’s largest pearl was discovered by a Filipino diver in a giant Tridacna (mollusk) under the Palawan Sea in 1934. Known as the “Pearl of Lao-Tzu,” the gem weighs 14 pounds and measures 9 1/2 inches long and 5 1/2 inches in diameter. As of May 1984, it was valued at US$42 million. It is believed to be 600 years old.

I’m leaving you with a quote from a British traveller, which I really agree to.

“Mayon is the most beautiful mountain I have ever seen, the world-renowned Fujiyama (Mt. Fuji) of Japan sinking into perfect insignificance by comparison.”
—British traveler-writer A. Henry Savage Landor

I Didn’t Say It was Your Fault; I Said I was Going to Blame a Bulgarian

Status: Gosh. I’m sooo… RICH. Haha. Kidding.
Music: Pag-alis - Barbie Almalbis

Wow! It’s been two weeks since I last updated this blog. Well, I don’t have any reason to go online anyway. Aside from updating this blog, the only reasons I step into cyberspace are (1) Fantasy Football, which I don’t expect you to understand because who cares about football in this basketball-crazy country aside from Ayn, KZ and myself; and (2) Plam, who is now attending a university and is very busy studying that he seldom goes online. Who is this Plam, you ask? Secret.

Anyway, another reason I haven’t updated this blog for so long is work. I sooo love my job. I was in Matabungkay Beach Resort last weekend and it’s considered a business/company trip. It was fun — especially when everything was paid by the company including my meals and they provided a car and a driver. Wowowee!

This Thursday, off to Villa Escudero in San Pablo City. Next Thursday, Enchanted Kingdom in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. And my boss requires me to go to different places every week (Who wouldn’t want to go to these places for free with a driver and a car and free meals)? And he calls this work. I call it fun, especially when he pays me thousands of pesos a day for “working”

Here’s another news. A friend in the province, Andrew, found out that I’m bisexual. He said he had no idea at all until he googled my (real) full name and found this blog.

No one in my family or in my province knows that I am bisexual or that I have a blog or that I use the name Yoshke as my pen/nick name. Although I have been posting several pictures of myself lately, I didn’t know that anyone would actually find this blog by googling my real full name.

But it’s okay. Andrew is a good friend, anyway. Nevertheless, as I’ve said a thousand times before, if you want to ruin my life, all you have to do is tell anyone in my family about it. And that’s it — I’d be dead.

It’s a good thing Andrew first talked to me and not ask anyone else in the province. So I was able to tell him not to tell anyone. Hihi.

I’ve been avoiding to type my full name on this blog but SOME BULGARIAN GUY unintentionally mentioned my real first name when he reacted to one of my entries. Hehehe. (Hey, I’m not blaming you. Hahaha. It’s okay.)

By the way, I would like to — I don’t know — thank or hate Bebs for sort of featuring me on his blog:

“Naisip ko dapat umeport ako ng English sa blog.  Kasi. Kasi. Si ES kasi.  Umieport ng inglesan sa blog.  Me nakabasa. Gwapo. Kamukha ni Tom Cruise slash Brandon Routh. In ader words, naging sila.  Kasi natuwa siya sa blog ni ES…”

Bebs, I don’t know what to say. I can’t say everything you said is absolutely true. Hmmm…. Let me see… Here: How was envy for dinner? Nyahaha.

Pero seryoso, Bebs, magkaibigan na lang kami. Wala naman kasing sense ang pagiging mag-on kung nasa kabilang parte siya ng mundo, ano? Ayan, nag-Tagalog tuloy ako.

JOACHIM LÖW, I’m Sooo Gonna Marry You

Posted on by Yoshke in Blurts, Euphoria, Sports |

Status: 13-0! 13-0! 13-0!
Music: If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight - Nikki Gil

Who is Joachim Löw, you ask? He is the new German National Football Team coach. He replaced the most animated coach in the recent World Cup Jürgen Klinsmann. And why wouldn’t I want to marry this guy? My God! A very impressive 13-0 win against San Marino. Again, 13-0! One more time, 13-0! That’s a record in European history!!! Four Podolski goals, and a couple each from Klose and Schweinsteiger. Wooh! And my points in Fantasy Football League is going up, up, up! Time to celebrate. Go Euro 2008! Go Deutschland! I’m gonna have my breakfast at Schwarzwalder or Treffpunkt Jedermann (German restaurants in Makati) tomorrow!!! That is, if I wake up early.

But I am a little sad because although David Villa managed to score two goals in their Euro2008 qualifying match against Northern Ireland (the hell, of all teams, why lose to Northern Ireland?), it was still not enough to send Spain to triumph. Northern Ireland 3-2 Spain. Tsk, tsk.

And oh, congrats to Team England. Go, go, go Terry and Gerrard! And yeah, because Zenedine Zidane already retired, my top three teams are: (1) Germany, (2) Spain and (3) England. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

13-0! 13-0! 13-0! I just can’t get over it.

Sometimes I Crack Myself Up

Posted on by Yoshke in Blurts, Friends, Sports |

Before anything else, I would like to celebrate with Cheenee because John Terry (Chelsea captain, defender, left) and Steven Gerrard (Liverpool captain, midfielder, right) were chosen as England’s captain and vice-captain respectively for the coming years. Terry and Gerrard are two of my most-loved players.

Although I am a true blue fan (Chelsea fan) I would’ve been happier if Gerrard grabbed the captaincy instead of Terry. But it really doesn’t matter that much. I love them both and they’re both great. England is my second favourite national team (next to Germany). Well, good luck. Hope they do great in Austria-Switzerland Euro 2008.

Where’s My Lawyer?

Don’t you just hate spams? Other than Bayern Munich and Chelsea newsletters (I signed up for these, so there’s no problem with these football clubs), and some Animax Channel  and JobStreet updates, I also receive e-mails from strangers that I don’t even know if they’re real humans or what. I’m sure you also experience finding foreign-language mails in your inbox, or letters from people asking for help, or notifications that you have won something but would seem impossible to claim! And tonight, guess what I have just received? It’s a mail from someone telling me this, just this and nothing else:

If you start taking Penis Enlarge Patch,
the world’s attention will be drawn to your dick.

What the hell?!?

This article is by Tarra Quismundo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer published on August 7.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Bayani Fernando yesterday suggested that large private schools located along major roads in the metropolis turn their football fields into parking lots.

This, he pointed out, would help solve the perennial traffic problem in areas surrounding schools….

…Fernando reiterated that he was serious about asking school officials to turn their football fields into parking areas for students’ vehicles. He particularly cited the schools located near Ortigas Avenue in Mandaluyong City and on Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City — considered the busiest roads in Metro Manila during the school year….

I only have one word to say to Bayani Fernando… WHATEVER?!?

Bayern Munich visited Japan and played with some kids there. Waaaah! I had envy for dinner tonight.

People, Like Opportunities, Come and Go

THE POST-GRADUATION EFFECT
You think life after graduation is much happier than college life? You’re wrong. It’s a complete change of lifestyle. And it’s not easy. Looking for jobs, leaving and being left by people you are used to be with, missing the review and lecture days…. It’s difficult

I have a couple of reasons to be sad. Kuya Amiel has officially moved out of the house this morning. He’ll be working in Clark. (sigh) Four years of being roommates ended just like that. Anyway, I’m also moving to Makati soon.

Another is that I used to complain because of all the companies that I have sent my resume to, no one was calling me for an interview or exam or whatever. But now, I’ve been receiving a lot of offers. It’s cool, really. But they’re challenging my decision-making skills. I can’t choose. But at the end of the day, I think I’ll just go for the company which gives the biggest compensation.

One thing is for sure, though. I’m gonna be a diplomat in two years time (naks, confidence) and so, whatever company I would work for in the next months, I won’t be staying there for long.

The End of the World as I Know It

Posted on by Yoshke in Emo, Sports |

It’s my favourite sport but sometimes, football can be the cruelest game in the world. I know, I know. Germany lost. And it’s really difficult to absorb the truth. I have been mourning since that first goal from Italy and nothing has changed. It feels as if someone so dear to me had passed away. I have never loved a sport team this much. And the World Cup is over for us. It did not matter that I was a bit embarassed that people were seeing me shed tears on my way home.

Last two minutes! Last two minutes of EXTRA TIME! How cruel could fate get? Italy delivered two goals in the last dying seconds of the match. Germany did not expect that something like that would happen. They might have been very relaxed, waiting for a penalty shoot-out because they know it would be a sure-win for them. But the penalty shoot-out never came because Italy scored.

But I’m not blaming the players. They did a very good job in the tournament. It’s just that the idea that Germany is not gonna be the World Champion saddens me so.

Anyway, I’m now hoping that France win. After all, they are my third favourite team. I don’t care about the little bet I have with Josh. Our deal: P500 — his if France wins; mine if Germany wins. But I have already lost. And I don’t care if I lose P500. I just want France to win this time — now that Germany has gone home.

Two Happy Goals and a Red Ticket

Posted on by Yoshke in Euphoria, Sports |

A GOAL THAT SAID IT ALL

Forgive me for being so into goals and stadia. I just can’t get enough of football these days. And so, I have changed my blog’s colour theme to match my favourite football team. And I will not stop talking about it until the World Cup is over. GO GERMANY!!!

When Juergen Klinsmann announced that he had chosen Jens Lehmann as his No. 1 player (No. 1, as in default goalkeeper), I was one of the many who protested. World-class goalie Oliver Kahn has already proven himself so many times and all of a sudden, the coach chose another man for the very crucial job. After Germany’s debut match with Costa Rica, where Lehmann conceded two goals, I felt uneasy. I was thinking that the coach indeed made a very bad decision. And then the next matches came and Lehmann proved me wrong. He is not just good, but arguably the best goalie in this tournament.
