Bioman Who?

June 27th, 2008 | Filed under Blurts, Family, TV, Vanities

I hate it when my friends talk about Bioman. Why? Because I can’t relate. I can’t remember even a single moment I watched Bioman. I don’t know what their powers were and what they could do. I don’t know its theme song, either. I remember Shaider, Ultraman, Koseidon, He-Man, She-Ra, Conan the Barbarian, Maskman, and Power Rangers. But Bioman? Nah. Na-uh. Nadah. Not really.

Funny because my earliest childhood memory was when I was 3 years old. (I’m 22; born 1986.) I remember a lot. As in A LOT. There is a myriad of vivid childhood images that I always play in my head. Sadly, none of those images are Bioman’s. Maybe because I didn’t watch it at all. You see, I’ve always been choosy. Haha.

Another kiddie TV classic that I just can’t remember watching? Batibot. Seriously. I don’t have any emotional connection to the show, Pong Pagong, Kuya Bodjie or Ate whoever-she-was. Every time I try to rummage through my thoughts and search for a bit of any Batibot-related memory, what I always find is ATBP (Awit, Titik, Bilang na Pambata) — Trisha, Rex, Carlo, Tito Miguel (Piolo Pascual), and that ridiculous Kapitan Bilang. No Batibot.

You might be thinking that I missed a great deal of my childhood and how great a loser I was when I was a kid for not watching these programs. But I think I had a childhood that many would envy. It’s just that TV wasn’t really that fun for me that time. Fun was outdoors. You see, I was a country boy. Haha. Lumaki ako sa lalawigan ng magigiting (Batangas). Less than a kilometer north of our house are woods and hills; south, a vast field and the beach. TV wasn’t that fun. Fun were the following:

  • flying/running kites
  • wandering around and playing hide-and-seek in the forest
  • climbing trees
  • stealing fruits from some farmer’s orchard
  • shooting birds with a slingshot (I was cruel as a kid)
  • hunting spiders for fights on stick
  • catching fireflies and grasshoppers
  • catching salagubang (June beetle), cutting its legs one by one, and letting it fly while tied to my wrist

Those were my definition of fun even after I was introduced to Sarah, Cedie, Remi, Julio, Julia, Mary, Romeo, another Remi, Tom, Huck, Cinderella, and the rest of them losers. And then, the magnificent world of violent anime. Haha. Starting with Sailormoon. (Er, okay, violent gay anime. Haha.) Zenki, B’t X and Thunder Jet soon followed. And then, the wacky Mojacko and Doraemon.

And oh, I remember being addicted to Superbook and Flying House. Thanks to my Catholic upbringing.

And yeah, right now I just miss my childhood.

PBB and Robi (Dapat May Rhyme)

April 10th, 2008 | Filed under Blurts, Hotties, TV

Status: Robi-happy.
Music: Feedback - Janet Jackson | Leavin’ - Jesse McCartney

Here I go again. Starting to get hooked on the show I always curse at. Haha. What is it exactly with PBB that always gets me addicted despite the number of times I have been disappointed and felt cheated by the show? Grrrrr. But anyway, Ima uphold voyeurism and power-tripping. After Lobo, no one can get between my eyes and my TV or whoever stupid enough to do that will certainly know how hard the four corners of my remote control really are.

Anyway, I HAVE A NEW CRUSH!!! Hahaha. His name is Robi Domingo. Damn, I adooore him. Hmmm. I remember, last teen season, I was rooting for Mikee Lee. I don’t know why but Mikee really had an unexplainable effect on me. Robi has, too. But much stronger. I can’t put a finger on what exactly it is with Robi and Mikee that gets me but heck, i loooov’em. They’re both Ateneans. But I swear, their school has nothing to do with it. Maybe it’s their “scholarly” characters. Dunno.

I also like Josef Elizalde, Nan Clenuar, Ejay Falcon, Alex Anselmuccio, Priscilla Navidad, Beauty Gonzales and Linda Backlund. The others, er… we’ll see.

I would love to share what I think about the other housemates but I haven’t absorbed their personalities yet. Perhaps, in the coming days. I will post a more decent entry about PBB Teen Edition and the other housemates soon. For now, just let me express how much crush Robi. Haha.

Philippine TV: Remakes Galore | Part 1

March 20th, 2008 | Filed under Celebrities, TV

Status: Asthmatic.
Music: All My Loving - The Beatles

Remakes are Philippine television’s new trend. Be it a local movie, a Latin American telenovela or an Asian series — name it — as long as it’s appealing, either ABS-CBN2 or GMA7 will pick it up, lay it on the table and turn it into something horrible. Well, not always.

I don’t know where I stand exactly on this. These remakes may not be very healthful for our media industries — I mean, come on, we can come up with something brilliantly original. In fact, we already have — but hey, it’s really interesting to anticipate how they will improve or mess up the original concept. The most exciting part on the part of the viewers is to see if the new cast can actually match that of the original.

Here are some of the remakes yet to hit our boobtubes and the rumored actors / actresses to play the lead roles, along with my comments and suggestions.

RUBI (ABS-CBN)

Country of Origin: Mexico
Plot: Rubí is a beautiful, charismatic young woman from a working-class background. She is studying at a university because of her sister’s great efforts. Rubí is best friends with Maribel, a wealthy young woman with a small defect in her leg. Rubí eventually meets Maribel’s boyfriend Hector and his best friend Alejandro. A much darker truth lies inside of Rubí. She is driven by a dark ambition that will stop at nothing to get what she wants, and what she wants is to escape from poverty and be wealthy.

Who? Who? Who?

They say: Angelica Panganiban, Wendy Valdez, Alessandra de Rossi

I say: Kristine Hermosa. Angelica or Alex would be great, too, but I can really imagine Kristine Hermosa as Rubi, ang bidang kontrabida. Kristine has been typecast as a naive poor girl whose face is always mistaken for a kitchen sink by her antagonists. It’s time for the vengeance of the century and a career makeover. But puhleaze, more acting workshops for her! But heck, she’s so right for this role. I’m more excited to see this one than Betty La Fea.

MY GIRL (ABS-CBN)

Country of origin: South Korea
Plot: Jasmine is an imposter, proficient in English, Chinese, and Japanese, while Julian is the second generation heir of a big corporation. Because of his grandfather’s illness, he is forced to ask Jasmine to act as his long-lost cousin so that his grandfather’s last wish can be fulfilled. Therefore, they are both bound in a lie so that no-one in the family knows the truth.

Who? Who? Who?

They say: Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson

I say: Maja Salvador or Toni Gonzaga. I like Kim but I just wish she could act. Maja and Toni act a whole lot better and I’m sure either could pull off a swindler role. If their only basis for casting Kim is that she’s chinita (thus matching the Oriental cheverness of the project), come on, that’s so shallow. But then again, Kimerald has a massive fan base. Ratings matter.

For Julian, I really think that Zanjoe Marudo is the top man for the job. Sam Milby would be good, too. Hey, Julian’s character doesn’t really require much acting.

YO SOY BETTY, LA FEA (ABS-CBN)

Country of Origin: Colombia
Plot: Although Betty graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s of Economy and has a Master’s degree in Finance, and speaks both English and French fluently, she has been unable to secure an interview in any job because, as she claims, her ugly picture ruins her otherwise impressive resume. Tired of her unsuccessful search for a job that would match her education and experience, she decides to apply for a job as secretary to the president of a fashion design company called Eco Moda.

Who? Who? Who?

They say: Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, KC Concepcion or Bea Alonzo

I say: Bea Alonzo. Regine is too old. Sarah is too young. KC is too rich (hehehe). Besides, an “ugly” role is no stranger to Bea. She portrayed Katrina Argos, an unattractive geek, on Kaytagal Kang Hinintay, albeit for a very short period. (Katrina bloomed eventually into a beautiful law student.) Bea is perfect for the role. Perfect.

Yes, I’m Gloating

March 16th, 2008 | Filed under Blurts, Music, TV

Jordin Sparks is making it BIG. “Tattoo,” the first single off her debut album, peaked at #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, while her latest release “No Air” currently sits at a comfortable #6.

Now, I wonder, where are those people who spat on Jordin’s win, claiming that Blake Lewis would sell much better post-American Idol? Hmmm. You can choke now. Hehe. (Kidding.)

Don’t get me wrong, I like Blake, too. It’s just that, you know… I told you so.

And You Think ‘American Idol’ is Ridiculous?

Music: Don’t Leave Me This Way - Ramiele Malubay

Did you know that Mariah Carey released a single called “Ken Lee?” No? Doesn’t ring a bell? Then let this Bulgarian Idol aspirant enlighten you with one of Mimi’s greatest songs. (Plamen, I’m gonna need you to translate this. :P )

And then we go back to where all this Idol mania started — the United Kingdom. Yes, that’s “X Factor” but you’ll also see Paula Abdul here as a hysterical guest judge. Move over, Madonna.

“America has delusional people, but honey, so does your country.”
Paula Abdul to Simon Cowell

You got that right, Paula. But stop the damn laughing. Please? Please? Hahaha.

And I thought nothing could beat this:

That’s our answer to Miss South Carolina — Miss Teen USA 2007.
Beauty pageant candidates these days. Tsk tsk.
Oh Gawd. I’m speechless.
And NO. Not all Filipinas are like them.

(But in fairness, whoever said we should judge a person according to his/her proficiency in English?)

Angel Locsin, Kapamilya Na!

July 29th, 2007 | Filed under Celebrities, TV

Status: Tonsilitis is killing me
Music: If it Makes You Happy
 - Sheryl Crow

I really have no plans of talking about the issue, but since all my friends have been festering and pestering me asking me for what I have to say about Angel Locsin’s ober-da-bakod stint, what the heck? Fine.

So where to begin? Again, I am not loyal to ABS-CBN 2. But if your definition of being a kapamilya or kapuso is based on who I like better, then fine, call me a kapamilya. Most of the shows I love are on ABS-CBN, and in GMA 7’s history, I’ve only had a few shows that really glued my eyes to the screen. One of them — CLICK. Click was a youth-oriented show aired on Saturday afternoons opposite G-Mik. I mean come on, between G-Mik and Click, I’d definitely choose Click. That was the first time I heard of her name. So when Click bade goodbye, I never heard of Angel again until her boyfriend’s fatal fall. And I think that Miko Sotto’s tragic death actually launched Angel’s career as a star. We all wanted to symphatise with the grieving girlfriend (not including Claudine Barretto who was somehow blamed for Rico Yan’s unexpected death, oh Gawd, I miss him).

Save the Cheerleader. Save the World!

June 21st, 2007 | Filed under Rants, TV

Status: Wet
Music: Back for Good
 - Take That

I got the title from a peyups.com poster -otep-, which he got from some other website. If you don’t watch the TV programme Heroes, that line “Save the Cheerleader. Save the world,” is actually very, very important for one character, the cheerleader, must be saved so they could all save the world. I refused to watch Pinoy Big Brother for the longest time, but coincidentally, when I was about to continue my Heroes marathon last Monday, I saw Gee-Ann hysterically expressing her frustrations and anguish about the current situation and how Wendy seemed to manipulate everyone in the house. Bravo, Gee-Ann, bravo! And I started watching Pinoy Big Brother again since. And although it’s been more than a month since I vowed not to watch PBB again, I realised I did not really miss anything significant. But this one, hmmm, I bet ABS-CBN is celebrating right now thinking that their “wise”, albeit unfair, decision of shoving Wendy back into the big yellow house is finally paying off. One word, baby: ratings.

These are the things about the housemates that watching PBB again has proven to me:

  1. Gee-Ann is indeed a fine lady. No matter how squatterly Wendy’s approach to the situation is, Gee-Ann continues to do things with class and poise. Poor girl she is, though. She’s rich, pretty, and smart, but she’s a weakling. Her self-confidence is below sea-level (which I understand because most weak people I know are actually  goodlooking and intelligent and wealthy. As if it’s God’s way of balancing things up. Weird.) And that’s what Wendy found out when she was evicted, and now that she’s back, she takes advantage of that. Nasapul mo Gee-Ann, “Kung ako, sume-strategy lang, hindi siya (Wendy) ang ino-nominate ko, dapat ikaw (Bea). E ikaw tong hindi mapa-tumba e. E siya, naevict na!”
  2. Bea is indeed calm. And being calm and composed always doesn’t mean being plastic. It just shows us that the girl thinks and does not do things which she knows will not do her any good. You go, girl. Have a happy period! Ehehehe.
  3. Mickey is indeed rational. Wendy could’ve manipulated everyone inside the house but not Mickey. I remember when Wendy was ranting about how Gee-Ann nominated her despite Gee-Ann’s claim that she loves her. Mickey said, “Don’t you love Bodie? Why did you nominate him?” Also, how he smashed Wendy’s face with statements like, “So it’s all about the money?” and “Don’t you think what you’re saying is unfair?”
  4. Bodie is indeed a wallflower. I still barely notice him. But it’s nice that now, he realised he had been fraternising with the wrong people inside the house. Too late, dude. You’re never gonna get my support. And my vote is precious. Ehehehe.
  5. Nel is indeed a sidekick. I loved what Bea told Nel the other night, “Basta ako, bida ako sa kwento ko. Ikaw, sa kwento mo, alagad lang.” Haha. Nasapul mo! Mabuhay ka Bea. Ayan kasi, Nel. Masyadong tuta ni Wendy.
  6. Bruce is indeed dumb. Shame on him. Being a UP grad, nakakahiya siya. How could he not realise that Wendy is just using him? And that he’s being controlled by that bitch? And how he makes gatong or making the situation worse instead of trying to fix things? Where’s your spine, man? When you think, use your brain, not your balls! Damn. He could’ve been one of the best contenders for this season’s Big Winner, but he lost it just because of damn lust. Ano ba naman, Bruce? Libog lang yan, nagpapaka-tanga ka na. To quote Asta, “Tonta. stupid. moron.” And for that, you and that fuckin’ Wendy fuckin’ deserve each other.
  7. I was wrong when I said that Wendy is the root of all evil inside the house. I was so wrong. She’s not the root of all evil. Wendy is evil. She is evil personified. My God. All my life I never thought that such a bad person could exist. And she’s doing it just to get the public’s sympathy so she could get that P1 Million na parati niyang bukambibig. You wish, arsehole. Oo na, totoong tao ka na. Lahat ng nakikita namin sa’yo, totoo. Pero sabe nga ni mental_indigestion, how about your boobs? Are they real, too? Hahahaha. Last night, Wendy asked Bruce: “Salbahe ba ako?” Damn. Nagtanong ka pa. And Bruce answered that with a firm “No!” Anubayun? SHUNGA! *ahem* TANGA! She’s a psychotic, greedy, stupid, insecure, envious, proud, egocentric, pathetic, fake-boobed son of a bitch! Sorry, I just had to say that. (A’right. *composing myself* Back to being diplomatic. Ehehehe.)
