Bababa Ba? Bababa.

I just received this anecdote from a friend, who had read this somewhere. And it made me realise how fun Tagalog really is as a language.

I was in the elevator with an American. We were going down to the ground floor, but before reaching it, we stopped at the 4th floor. It opened to a Filipino.

She asked me, “Bababa ba?

I replied, “Bababa.

In she went. Upon closing of the door, the American asked curiously, “I’m sorry. Did you guys just have a conversation?

A’right. To all my non-Filipino readers, I’m gonna explain this to you. “Bababa” is the tagalog word for “going down.” And to change any noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, or adjective to a question, all you have to do is add “ba.” Of course, a question mark and the proper intonation go with it.

She: “Bababa ba?” (Going down?)
Me: “Bababa.” (Going down.)

There. Though they might have sounded like they were trying to mimic goats/sheep, they actually had a conversation. Hehehe. Ahlove’t.  Read more Viewed 724 times by 273 visitors this month

We Can’t Be Friends

Posted on by Yoshke in Love, Rants |

Note: This is not a poem.

To you, uber-cute son of a bitch (sorry, foul language),

Damn you, don’t text me.
When you text me, I can’t help replying.
When I reply, we start talking.
When we talk, we get to know each other better.
If we keep on doing that, we’ll become friends.

And we can’t be friends.
If we’re friends, we’ll get closer.
If we’re closer, I’ll care so much.
When I care that much, I might fall.
If I fall, I might get hurt.
When I’m hurt, I become vengeful.
You won’t like that.

Your sister won’t like that, either.

So please, don’t do this.
We can’t be friends.
Seriously.

And oh, again, don’t text me.
And stop calling me!!!

So there. I said it.

*** Actually, I really, really like the guy. He’s intelligent, knowledgeable, articulate, funny, and most of all, CUTE. But that’s exactly the problem. If he continues being nice to me, I’ll fall. To quote Ian Hainsworth (Desperate Housewives): “If we can’t have anything more than friendship, then we’d rather have nothing. Nothing at all.”

Waaaah. But damn! I like him. Viewed 738 times by 254 visitors this month

Yey! I’m sooo happy. Three of my most loved actors are joining the cast of the next movie installment of Harry Potter. According to this site:

Joseph Fiennes, Stuart Townsend and Naomi Watts are the latest addition to the 6th Harry Potter movie ‘Half-Blood Prince.’ Schedule for a late November 2008 release, the new Harry Potter movie will start shooting in September…”

Naomi Watts might play Narcissa Malfoy. Stuart Townsend and Joseph Fiennes? Hmmm. I don’t know yet. But this is great news! Ahlove’t.

UPDATE: FALSE NEWS!

The Art of Sabotage

Posted on by Yoshke in Friends, University |

Sabotage. Everyone is capable of it. But some go about it more ruthlessly than others… like the ones who crave vengeance… or the ones who hunger for love… or the ones who are determined to burn bridges. And then there are those who simply want something… Something that belongs to someone else.”
                                 — Mary Alice Young, Desperate Housewives

What a nice way to begin this blog entry. Hmmm. Anyway, whatever it is that I feel right now, Prech felt it first, although we’re talking about two different bananas. So let me just quote her:

“Yum! Don’t we all just love to gloat when we know we are soooo right in the first place and it’s too late for people to realize the truth and we wanna say ‘I told you so’ to smack them in the face?”

Music: Wait for You
– Elliot Yamin

Yep, it’s true! After the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy hosts and Nigel Barker, the Ayala Malls is bringing Elliott Yamin to the country. Don’t you just love Ayala Malls? Hahaha. Elliott has always beeen one of my favourite American Idol hopefuls (all seasons). And man, am I delirious! First, Christina Aguilera, now Elliott. But there’ll be no big concert. It’ll just be a simple mall tour. Simple. Interactive. Intimate.

Anyways, here’s the schedule I got from Elliot’s myspace:

September 21 – Trinoma, Quezon City
September 22 – Glorietta, Makati
September 23 – Alabang Town Centre
September 26 – Ayala Mall, Cebu
September 28 – Market! Market!, Taguig

Oh Elliott, I’ll surely wait for you.

Christina Aguilera: Back to Basics Tour Live in Manila

Posted on by Yoshke in Euphoria, Music |

Status: What a humid day. Whew.
Music: Candyman
- Christina Aguilera

When they said that they’d be bringing the greatest show to be staged in the country in years, they weren’t exaggerating. The concert was fantastic. I know this post is a bit late, and a lot has already been written about the concert, but I still want to blog it. You know, to remember, in the future.

Weeks before the big night, I was desperately looking for someone who could go with me to that concert but it was tough. Everyone wished to go, and would go had the tickets been not that costly. Until I finally brainwashed a high school friend, Isa, into going with me. We met up in Makati and planned to just take a cab to The Fort (Bonifacio Open Field) in Taguig. Before we left, she was “warned” by a colleague of hers that Christina gets tired easily and her singing suffers after a short while. I just shook the comment off.

Christina opened the show with Ain’t No Other Man. And I just couldn’t believe I was already seeing her perform live. I knew she was great, but I never expected she was DIVINE. I had several goosebumps attack. The first was when she performed Slow Down Baby, one of my two most loved tracks in the album. The other one was Understand. But it didn’t have any massive effect on me that night for she sang it so soon. I was also hoping she would perform some of her old songs from her teeny-bopper days to her bitchy ones. And I wasn’t disappointed.

The theme of the concert was 1930s-60s (?), of course, and it was nice how they were still able to perform Come On Over Baby (tango-like, jazzy, whatever) and What A Girl Wants (no idea what arrangement that was, but it was great and funny) without breaking the theme.

But there was a sudden change of theme halfway. The first part was the vintage theme and all she wore were all white. The second part was very wild, colourful, and grandiose: circus. And man, did I adore the production. It was magnificent. She was handcuffed on a target board, then she was riding a carousel horse, yadda yadda. It was crazy! She was really having a great time, and we were, too.

When drunk navy guys (dancers) emerged chanting “Tarzan and Jane swingin’ on a vine,” the place was almost destroyed with the fans’ tremendous hollering. For starters, those male dancers were oh-so-sexy. To be honest, before that concert, Candyman was not one of my favourites. But after her performance, I realised it was an incredibly fun song. She also performed Dirrty to which everyone was singing along, and as she was dancing there, I noticed someone in the background setting up a couch, and I knew right then that the next one was gonna be Lady Marmalade. It was one of the best parts of the show.

And the best part of the evening? Beautiful. The most beautiful moment was when she performed Beautiful and everyone was singing with her, raising and swaying our arms together. It was sooo moving. I almost cried. Not because I could relate to the song (but maybe I did or do) but because I just couldn’t believe that my most favourite female artist was singing my most favourite record of hers. Gawd.

I laughed everytime the crowd went crazy each time Christina belts out something. But damn, she really deserved all those cheers and applause. Although I was a little disappointed that she didn’t perform her songs which are her biggest hits in the country Genie in a Bottle, I Turn to You, and A Voice Within, I just said to Isa, “My night’d be complete if she would just sing ‘Fighter.’” She did. It was her last song. I was the happiest fan in the world. And then she shouted, “Mahal Namin Kayo!” (“We love you!”) Wow. I swore I could see angels coming down from heaven — NOT. But it was close. Hehehe. Man, I love her.

After the show, I told Isa, “Whoever said she gets tired easily.” Viewed 675 times by 249 visitors this month

Job Requirement: Must Be in Your Right Mind

Posted on by Yoshke in Career |

Music: Take My Breath Away
 - Emma Bunton

I’ve been trying to find a job online for a week now. The job I want is just something that can fill the gap between now and me-becoming-a-diplomat day. And being naturally picky, I am really having a tough time finding jobs which I think suit me, or at least interest me. Having a BA Film degree (which is under the Mass Communication umbrella ella ella eh eh eh hehehehe), the employers who are most likely to hire me are advertising agencies, production houses, TV networks, and movie outfits. However, I’ve tried all of them and I didn’t like them. Or if I did like them, the compensation wasn’t really likeable. Hehehe. And I don’t want a call centre job. And it’s too risky to set up my own business using the savings I got. So there’s only one place for me to go: the Academe. I love teaching, anyways. So why not? And I was glad to find sooo many schools looking for teachers or instructors. Most of them require a Master’s degree, but some don’t. So I composed an email with a good cover letter saying why they should hire me and that they could check out my attached resume, and sent that e-mail to a few prospects.

It’s been a week since I sent them and I was really worried not one of them gave me a call. I was already thinking:

“Am I really that incompetent? My resume is impressive, or is it really? Am I doomed? The employers don’t like me, or have no interest in me because, I don’t know, maybe I’m not good enough.”

I was really feeling terrible. So I decided to try again: send another e-mail. I opened my Sent Items folder so I could just forward my previous e-mail to another set of employers when I realised one stupid thing. One very stupid thing. I forgot to attach my resume to my previous e-mails.

Damn.

Anyway, good news now. I sold one of the full-length screenplays I wrote when I was still in college to a Filipino-American independent producer. Yey! Finally, one of my scripts will become a film. They got the script at a pretty low price but I’m happy. I’m just a budding writer. It was the first full-length script I wrote, and it was just a class project. After all, not all scripts written for a class get produced for real. I told my professors back in college about it and they said I made a pretty good deal. Yey. I’m now a bit richer. Just a bit. Hehe.
