Support the Campaign for the ‘Rare Diseases Act of the Philippines’

Posted on by Yoshke in Causes, Public Affairs |

Last month, I had the pleasure and honor of being invited into the home of Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders President Cynthia Magdaraog for a very important social media project. Although I have been a social media specialist for two years already, this project has got to be the most ambitious yet the most “worth-it.” The goal is to gather 500,000 signatures to rally lawmakers in passing Senate Bill 3087 or the Rare Diseases Act of the Philippines. All these signatures should be in by February 26, 2011, in time for the World Rare Diseases Day.

It’s a noble cause and I believe everyone should be a part of it. That’s why, together with the PhilippineBeaches.org fan page, we are pushing for this campaign the hardest we can. Please take some time to give us your signature. You have no idea how much of a difference your signature can make.

Every baby is truly a bundle of innocent bliss and joy. He is a picture of hope and promising future. However, he could be one in every 20,000 babies—although appearing normal at birth—will, at some time, develop a disorder counted among the group of dreaded diseases called rare or orphan disorders. These are long standing, life threatening, progressive, and disabling conditions that require multi-disciplinary care and which afflicts babies from all social and economic classes.

But since some of these disorders are yet to be fully grasped and understood by medical science, babies afflicted with these medical conditions, often times, are not given immediate attention due to delayed and incorrect diagnosis—subjecting them even more to serious health risks and consequences. Still, babies fortunate enough to have been diagnosed properly and promptly faced yet another serious challenge: the high cost of treatment and medication well beyond the reach of most Filipino families. But for the few who may have the capacity, optimal care is still elusive due to the scarcity of specialists and facilities that can handle their special needs.

Since these disorders affect only a small percentage of the population, very little attention is spared by the government, the private sector and the public at large. Very few doctors specialize in this discipline. Pharmaceutical companies tend to overlook the manufacture of products for these conditions because of the small or even zero profit potential. And the genetic nature of these disorders makes research painstakingly long and difficult.

Consequently, patients with rare disorders have been isolated from the health sector and the society. As such, they have been considered as social and medical orphans.

You can help by filling out the form below. Accomplishing the form is considered a signature.

You can also show your support by forwarding this link to your network of family and friends.

That “Eureka” Moment:
Top 10 Accidental Inventions

Posted on by Yoshke in Lists, Science, Trivia |

Everybody knows the story of how Archimedes accidentally realised how to measure the volume of irregularly-shaped objects just by soaking himself in a tub. The story of how Alexander Fleming unintentionally discovered the bacteria-fighting properties of a certain mould, which would later inspire the invention of penicillin, is being taught in schools. These are just two of the most amazing accidental discoveries that most people are aware of. If you are blown away by how chance played a huge role in many accidental discoveries, you’ll be more whacked out by some of the greatest and funniest accidental inventions.

Whether it is an experiment that went utterly wrong but produced unsolicited results or a simple situation that squeezed the creative juices out of people, an accidental invention is surely something that never fails to introduce our jaws to the floor. Here is a list of the ten greatest accidental inventions in the past that caught mankind off-guard.

10. Ice Cream Cones

If you don’t believe in fate, ice cream cones will make you. Ice cream cones are a worldwide sensation today. Who would have thought that fate had a lot to do with its advent. The humble beginnings of these yummy cones can be traced back to 1904 at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Prior to that time, ice cream was served on bowls.

But on one particularly sweltering day, two stores were standing near each other. One was selling ice cream while the other was selling zalabia, a kind of Persian wafer thin waffle. While the latter was not doing good business, ice cream was a hit at the fair. Then, the ice cream store ran out of dishes. Instead of panicking, the store owner came up with an excellent idea of buying zalabia from the other store, rolling them into cones and popping the ice cream on top. The rest is delicious history.

9. Potato Chips

If creativity is the root of all ice cream cones, annoyance is to blame for the creation of the good ol’ potato chips. In 1853, George Crum, a chef in Saratoga, New York, had a very hard-to-please customer. Cornelius Vanderbilt, a railway magnate, refused eating the fries that the chef served him. He repeatedly sent them back, demanding that the fries be sliced a bit thinner. The miffed Crum finally reached the boiling point so he sliced the potatoes so thin and fried them so that his fussy customer couldn’t eat them with a fork. The comedy is that Vanderbilt actually liked it. Soon, all the guests at the resort were craving for the crisp potatoes. Later, it officially became part of the menu as Saratoga Chips.

8. Post-it notes

In 1968, Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist was trying to improve adhesive tape. Unfortunately, he only managed to produce semi-sticky adhesive that is not even suitable for tape. Despite being so frustrated about the failure, he decided to set aside his invention, hoping that it could be of great use in the future but he didn’t know what.

Four years later, another 3M researcher, while singing with his church choir, needed something to keep his marker from falling out of his hymnal. Chewing gum would prove to be a little messy, so what he needed was something that would not stick permanently. Then, he finally saw the light when he remembered the weak glue that his co-worker invented a few years back. It was the beginning of the ubiquitous post-it note, which would later be created in 1980.

Pagbabago

Posted on by Yoshke in Emo, Love, Personal Life |

It was a Tuesday evening. I was walking down the street with a box containing a cake in my hands. It was her favorite.

I stopped in front of her house. Turned to the door. Stopped. Lifted my left hand to knock. Hesitated. At last, I mustered all the courage to make that gentle, reluctant thumping sound as the knuckles of my hand hit the door. It opened. She was there standing in front of me. She was pretty. She was young. She was my girlfriend. We were both 19.

She invited me in as I handed the cake to her. We proceeded to the dining area and she opened the box. There was an obvious delight when she opened the box and saw what was inside of it. She was slicing the cake. “You want some?” she offered.

“No, no. I’m good.” I never liked sweets. I thought it was a misleading taste. Sweetness, I thought, was the taste we use to cover the bitterness of many things. I hated candies. I wasn’t crazy for chocolates. Cakes? Thanks, but no, thanks.

“Still hating cakes? You haven’t changed a bit,” she smiled.

“Er, about that. I have something to tell you.” Finally, I was about to say it. I didn’t think I was ready to admit what I was about to reveal for I, myself, had not accepted it. What I had to say back then started an agonizing evening filled with many “why’s” and “how’s.” There were some tears. There was some consoling. But thank God it ended with much understanding. That’s exactly why I fell in love with her in the first place. She had always been there to offer support and be my leaning wall. It’s just that this time, although she was still there for me to lean on, I felt like it was about to crumble. She was about to crumble. It was my fault.

We never talked since then.

3 Funny Call Videos on YouTube

Posted on by Yoshke in Humor, Videos |

What’s the last letter of the alphabet?

For one very special person in the world, it’s “Ek.” Move over, Z.

I stumbled upon this video on Facebook (a lot of my friends shared a link to this video). I was working, doing my usual Facebook monitoring and I decided to finally watch the video and find out exactly. Boy, I almost dried trying to hold my laughs. Seriously.

My favorite part, of course, was when they were going through the alphabet and they reached “Elemeno.” Also towards the end, “W X Y Z. And Ek.”

I’m not sure whether this is an actual call or somewhat fake but regardless, Kamakha Brekker, wherever you are, please give this guy a call.

After watching the video, I was reminded by another hilarious video on YouTube featuring 911 call by a little boy. Here it is:

Yoshke is Evil | The Couple on the Bus

Posted on by Yoshke in Emo, Personal Life |

This  is a part of the Yoshke is Evil series, in which I will narrate incidents where I thought I was inconsiderate, insensitive or evil. This incident happened a few months ago and I’m still not over it.

I love taking the bus at night, especially when the roads are almost empty. That’s why one time, after a night of shopping and conversations over coffee with my friends at Trinoma, it was my default choice to take the bus.

I made my way out of the mall through the Mindanao Exit, walked along North Avenue, crossed the overpass to EDSA and waited for a bus. After two sticks of cigarettes, one finally stopped. I hopped in and chose a seat among completely vacant rows at the back of the bus.

In that part of the bus, there were just me and a couple — a man and a woman. They were seated opposite me. They seemed like they didn’t know each other as they were occupying the end seats and there was one seat between them. Seated closer to the aisle was a man. The man looked like a laborer, a construction worker. He was dirty and was carrying a big bulky black bag, which was on the floor. He was thin and he looked like a drug addict. I even joked in my head and though that this was the type of man you would expect to just stand and declare a hold-up. I laughed secretly and scolded myself, “God, Yoshke, you’re being too judgmental. Not because he looks like that doesn’t mean he’s gonna do something bad. Bad, bad Yoshke. Stop it.”

Dump Your Guy, Date Andre

Posted on by Yoshke in Conversations, Friends, Humor |

The last time I featured Andre and his crazy antics on this blog was in December last year when I posted about Pasay City. A lot has changed since then. For starters, we are now working with the same company. And we’re not just officemates, we’re also in the same team. We’re also housemates. So you can just imagine how many doses of major major “crazy” I get from him every day.

Well, Andre is single. Very much so. And if you’re looking for a witty, brilliant, vibrant young guy who can brighten up your day with just a few words, Andre is for you. (OMG I sound like a pimp.) But hey, seriously, he’s a catch. And if you’re looking, drop a comment because he is looking, too. He has been looking. For a long time. Very long time. Very, very long time. Please guys, somebody just take him! It’s such a looong time already. LOL.

And much like the Promil Kid, Andre is actually a most-requested on this blog. So here’s a piece of him. Reasons why Andre is the perfect guy for you. Take it, take it. (Batteries Sold Separately.)

ANDRE IS CHARITABLE.

Andre and I were walking  to our apartment building when we spotted this goodlooking guy having lunch at a carinderia near our place. He squeezed my arm. (That’s a sign of Andre having a chuvachoo-choo moment. Not that chuvachoo-choo means love; it could be just libog for all we know.)

Andre: OMG, Yoshke. Look over there.
Yoshke: Yeah, he’s cute.
Andre: Eeeeeh.
Yoshke: But he’s kinda not your market. You know, social class-wise.
Andre: True. Pero di ba? Siya yung tipong OK lang saken. OK lang saken na gamitin nya ako. Parang gusto ko syang iahon sa kahirapan. Syeeet. Bibigyan ko sya ng pangkabuhayan showcase a la Wowowee!

ANDRE IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR OPPORTUNITIES

Shy Guy, Andre and I were having dinner when Shy Guy mentioned that from his office, they could see Jake Cuenca’s jaw dropping I-want-to-be-a-pair-of-briefs-someday billboard for Bench Uncut.

Andre: OMG OMG OMG! May job opening ba sa inyo? Kahit anong trabaho.
Yoshke: Haha, I thought you’re very happy with your job.
Andre: Eeeh, with Jake there, I could be happier!

Sam Milby and Guji Lorenzana Heat Up Cosmopolitan’s Centerfolds 2010

Posted on by Yoshke in Celebrities, Entertainment, Hotties |

Sam Milby joins the ranks of Derek Ramsay, Jay-R, Dingdong Dantes, Richard Gutierrez and Gerald Anderson as he sheds off some clothes to grace the cover of Cosmo Men, the highly anticipated mini-catalogue of the hottest men on earth. I’m more than excited about is as I adore Sam Milby from head to toe. Nothing is better than a shirtless picture of Sam Milby.

“Prepare to be ravaged,” says the cover and I’m ready, Sam, I’m ready. Ravage me. Meow.

Take a look at this gorgeous, sexy cover. Isn’t he wild? And I’m not referring to the tiger.

Cosmopolitan’s Centerfolds 2010 will also feature the “newly built” Christian Bautista, Agua Bendita star Matteo Guidicelli, StarStruck alumnus Rocco Nacino and Pinoy Big Brother Double Up ex-housemate Tom Rodriguez. Also in the magazine are Bryann Foronda, Joross Gamboa, Carl Guevara, and Fabio Ide.

And oh, one of my favorite hunks, singer-actor Guji Lorenzana is there, too! I love him to death. He’s just so scorching hot shirtless.

My Top 100 All-Time Favorite Love Songs (Part 5)

Posted on by Yoshke in Entertainment, Lists, Music |

Love songs are here to stay. No matter what genre dominates the airwaves, romantic elements just keep on creeping its way into pop. Love songs know no season, gender, age and territory. It’s just so universal. Everyone can relate to love songs.

This is the fifth installment of my list of 100 love songs that I am completely in love with. This batch includes singles from number 31-45. Again, this is a personal list — songs that have touched me in many ways. (Click on the title of the song to listen to it.)

45. Ricky Martin feat Christina Aguilera – Nobody Wants to Be Lonely

I worship Christina Aguilera but most of her songs that I totally adore are not love songs — Beautiful, for example, is very inspirational but is not a love song. Nevertheless, her collaboration with Ricky Martin is a classic for me. It reminds me of my high school days and this song just speaks for many people who have been longing for someone, fearing the idea of being alone.

Time is precious and it’s slipping away
and I’ve been waiting for you all of my life
Nobody wants to be lonely so why
Why don’t you let me love you

Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera were huge superstars at the time and although it did not enjoy extreme success in the US (peaking somewhere around number 13 in US Billboard), I believe it was very successful in the rest of the world.

I also love most of Ricky Martin’s ballads such as She’s All I Ever Had, I Count the Minutes and his work with Meja, Private Emotion.

44. Third Eye Blind – Deep Inside of You

When I heard this song for the first time, I fell in love with it almost instantly. It’s just sensual, romantic and heart-breaking at the same time. I know the kind of sexual reference was intentional, but you can read it in a purely romantic way. The song encapsulates the feeling of being part of a relationship that has just ended but you invested so much emotions that when the relationship died, a part of you died with it.

I’ve never felt alone
Till I met you
I’m alright on my own
And then I met you
And I’d know what to do if I just knew what’s coming

I would change myself if I could
I’d walk with my own people if I could find them,
And I’d say that I’m sorry to you,
I’m sorry to you, and I don’t want to call you,
But then I want to call you cause I don’t want to crush you,
But I feel like crushing you
And it’s true

43. Mariah Carey feat Bone Thugs N Harmony – Breakdown

One thing that I really really really love about Mariah Carey is that she knows how to tell a story using her instruments — the voice and the pen. Mariah is not just an extraordinary vocalist, she’s also a good songwriter. Her songs are very believable — words unpretentious and voice soulful.

You called yesterday to basically say
That you care for me but that you’re just not in love
Immediately I pretended to be feeling similarly
And led you to believe I was O.K.
To just walk away from the one thing
That’s unyielding and sacred to me

I’m sure many of us have loved or cared so much about someone but sadly the feeling is one-way. And when they say that to us upfront, we pretend it doesn’t matter. But the truth is, we are devastated. That’s what Breakdown is all about. It’s just a beautiful song.

Angel Locsin and John Lloyd Cruz Star in IMORTAL

Posted on by Yoshke in Celebrities, Entertainment, TV |

I’m sooo excited! Soon to hit the small screen is the much anticipated series called IMORTAL, sequel to the award-winning and highly successful LOBO.

I guess one of the most remarkable things about this new show is the fact that this is the first team-up of Angel Locsin, who was nominated in the International Emmy for her performance in Lobo, and John Lloyd Cruz, who will be doing fantasy for the first time. Here’s trailer fresh from the oven:

Directed by Chito Rono and Jerry Lopez Sineneng, IMORTAL stars Maricar Reyes, Chin chin Gutierrez, Jake Roxas, Gladys Reyes, Jaime Fabregas and Rico Blanco.

Aside from the fact that I love Angel Locsin and John Lloyd Cruz to bits, I am a big Lobo fan. Lobo is one of the three ABS-CBN teleseryes in recent memory that, to me, are phenomenal in terms of quality and impact — the other two being Maging Sino Ka Man and Tayong Dalawa.

Christina Aguilera and Cher Join Forces in ‘Burlesque’

Posted on by Yoshke in Entertainment, Movies, Music |

After Britney Spears’ snooze-fest called Crossroads and Mariah Carey’s near-career-suicide Glitter, Christina Aguilera makes an attempt to debunk the seemingly true idea that contemporary singers are not welcome in the silver screen. I love Britney and Mariah to bits but their performances in their respective first topbilled flicks really disappointed me. (Thank God, Mimi was able to redeem herself in Precious.) This is why I can’t help but be scared for Christina Aguilera, whom I adore as well.

Christina Aguilera’s fourth studio album Bionic was not well-received and there’s just too much undeserved negativity going on around her so I’m starting to fear that Burlesque might even worsen the situation. By the way, here’s the trailer:

After watching the trailer, I had this feeling that it would be a small town girl living in a lonely world going to Hollywood to wear almost nothing on stage cliche. But like what a friend told me, many musicals today are formulaic — Moulin Rouge is cliche as hell, Dreamgirls is freakin’ cliche, even Glee is cliche. What will make  or break this movie is the execution.
